The Humber River: Upstream front crawl

Friday, August 21, 2015

I have never swam here, even though I've been coming to its banks since before I could pronounce my Rs. The Humbah -- where legend has it the geese chased my two-year-old self away from the water's edge, hissing, biting.

Earlier this summer, I sat in the grass while my baby slept and the Queen Anne's lace grew taller than my waist, and watched a man leave his shoes, his shirt on the shale beach and do front crawl upstream. I was horrified -- doesn't he know how dirty the water is? -- but also jealous. Mostly jealous.

I have always wanted to swim in the centre of this river.
